Eco-design Scenario Introduction

Acme Foods: A typical packaging user

Product Canned soups
Annual Volume 42,000,000 cans
Location Anytown, USA

Acme Foods is a fictional food manufacturer meant to represent the case of a typical packaging user who would benefit from the Y.G. eco-design service. The company’s Anytown manufacturing facility, which produces the company’s canned soups, heard about the service through the Y.G. Packaging Solutions newsletter and scheduled a consultation to see how it could help them with their packaging problems.

Acme’s packaging needs

During their consultation with Y.G. Packaging Solutions, Acme’s Anytown plant leadership revealed that they have been experiencing problems with product damage in transit. Damaged unit loads cannot be sold, and Acme currently loses 5% of their unit loads to transit damages. That’s 2.1 million cans of unsellable soup per year! They would like to reduce this figure as much as possible by improving the integrity of their distribution packaging.

Acme’s sustainability goals

Acme’s most recent sustainability report describes three ESG initiatives that relate to distribution packaging:

    1. Reduce Scope I and III carbon emissions by 30% relative to 2019 baseline by 2030

    2. Use 100% recyclable packaging materials by 2030

    3. Increase recycled content of packaging from 15% to 30% by 2030

The Y.G. contribution

Incorporating the information provided during our consultation with Acme Foods, this Y.G. Packaging Solutions eco-design project will focus on reducing transit damages, reducing Scope I and III emissions, and incorporating recycled and recyclable packaging materials. Next, an assessment of existing packaging systems in the Anytown facility will begin.
